Poem of the Week for April 8th 2008
Lying in the Sun
One morning while reading the newspaper I had seen the horrifying pictures of, and read the equally horrifying details about, millions of children starving to death in Africa.
That same afternoon, while taking a break from my writing and lying on my veranda in the afternoon sun, my sun-drenched and drifting mind was invaded by the particularly energetic noises of my local sparrow friends attacking the bread I had sprinkled out for them.
The two events of the day suddenly blended ……
Lying in the Sun
The thudding of sparrow beaks
drums through the bread-strewn ground
into my truant ear
(do I hear the distant sound
of a child's hand scraping ......)
